Korea’s First Obesity Drug Approved - Hanmi’s Stock Fell
Hello, this is Treasurer.
Hanmi Pharmaceutical’s obesity drug Efpeglenatide has received approval from Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, becoming the first domestically developed GLP-1 obesity treatment.
But on October 8, Hanmi Pharmaceutical’s stock fell 10.02%, even after rising about 6% in early trading.
Why did the stock fall after positive news?
The Stock Had Already Moved Before Approval

Hanmi Pharmaceutical rose from KRW 501,000 on October 1 to KRW 534,000 on October 7, gaining about 6.6% before the approval announcement.
This is known as pricing in expectations.
When investors expect good news in advance, they may buy before the announcement. Once the news becomes official, some investors take profits.
On October 8, the stock initially climbed to KRW 565,000, but later closed at KRW 480,500, down 10.02%.
The decline was not driven by profit-taking alone. Weak sentiment across Korean biotech stocks also added pressure.
Approval Does Not Mean Immediate Revenue

Efpeglenatide is a GLP-1 obesity treatment.
Hanmi reported an average weight loss of 9.75% after 40 weeks in its Phase 3 trial. However, direct comparisons with Wegovy or Mounjaro are difficult because trial periods and designs differ.
The next question is commercial competitiveness.
Analysts expect Efpeglenatide to be priced more than 30% below Wegovy, which could improve its position in the Korean market.
Still, approval alone does not guarantee strong sales.
Actual revenue will depend on pricing, patient demand, supply capacity, and competition.
The Stock Fell, but Did Hanmi’s Value Fall Too?

Not necessarily.
According to AlphaLenz, analysts’ average target price for Hanmi Pharmaceutical is about KRW 666,000, with the highest target at KRW 730,000.
Recent target-price increases have been driven less by Efpeglenatide itself and more by HM17321, Hanmi’s next-generation obesity drug candidate licensed to Roche.
This shows that short-term stock moves and long-term company valuations can move in different directions.
Why Are Obesity Drug ETFs Falling?
Source: 조선일보
The obesity treatment market continues to grow, but related ETFs have recently underperformed.
- KODEX Global Obesity Treatment TOP2 Plus: -7.77%
- RISE Global Obesity Industry TOP2+: -7.08%
- TIGER Global Obesity Treatment TOP2 Plus: -4.68%
These ETFs have large exposures to market leaders such as Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.
But as new competitors enter with lower-priced treatments, market share and profitability could come under pressure.
So, a growing market does not necessarily mean every related stock will rise.
What matters is whether industry growth actually translates into revenue and profit for each company.
Look Beyond the Headline with AlphaLenz
Drug approval is clearly important news for Hanmi Pharmaceutical.
But investors should look beyond a simple equation of approval = higher stock price.
It is also important to ask how much of the news was already priced in, whether earnings expectations are changing, and how analysts are valuing the company.
With AlphaLenz, investors can review Hanmi Pharmaceutical’s stock performance, key news, earnings consensus, and analyst outlook in one place.

Going forward, key factors will include Efpeglenatide’s final launch price, sales performance, and its actual contribution to Hanmi’s revenue and earnings.
The key is not just whether the news is positive, but whether it is already priced in and whether it can ultimately translate into earnings.
